Before You Begin

The Goal of This Study:

  • To learn to slow down in our study of God’s Word.
  • To learn how to comprehend, interpret, and apply God’s Scripture.
  • To do the hard work for the greater benefit (Understanding of the Scriptures, intimacy with God, being transformed by His Word, growing a love for His Word, to learn how to study His Word on your own).

How to Use this Study:

  • Pray – Before you begin each day of study, take time to pray. Adore God for who He is and who the Scriptures reveal Him to be, confess any sins that you have committed that will hinder your time with Him, thank the Lord that you get to study His Word even when it’s difficult, and ask that His Holy Spirit in you would illuminate the Scriptures to you.
  • Do what you can and go at your own pace – At a first glance this study can easily become very overwhelming. My encouragement to you is to not become discouraged or overwhelmed by this material. It is all meant simply to help you dig deeper into God’s Word. Do what you can and at the pace that you can.
  • Use what is helpful to you – In my own study of the Word, I have learned to take the tools that have helped me learn best from the various Bible studies I’ve done and incorporate them into my own study time. In this study I will bring in different tools from studies and people I have learned from. Feel free to do the same with this one! Take what is helpful for you and leave what is not. Allow this study to guide your own way of studying Scriptures.
  • Comprehension through repetition – You will notice that we will be re-reading the text several times. I challenge you to NOT skip over this! It can be easy for us to assume that we already know what the text says. But, the more we read it and hear it, the more we will understand it and the more it will mark our hearts.
  • Hearing the Word of God – I encourage you to listen to the the book of Philippians as much as possible! Download a Bible app and listen to the book of Philippians while you’re chilling, doing chores, driving, walking, whenever!
  • Feeling lost? – Some of these questions are simply meant to stir thought, you may not have an answer to a question, and that’s ok! This is not meant to be a fill in the blank test. Again, this study is meant to help you think deeply about God’s Word. Feeling lost is OKAY. As we feel lost we begin to see the things we don’t know. It’s when we realize what we don’t know that we begin a wonderful learning process.
  • Ask for the Lord’s help – Ask for the Lord’s guidance! We cannot study God’s Word without the help of the Holy Spirit. Ask for the Holy Spirit to give you understanding and joy in your study of His Word.
  • Ask for help from the leaders – Ask for help! If you feel lost or overwhelmed, reach out to one of us leaders, or bring those feelings and questions to our group discussion time. Trust me, you will not be the only one!
  • Digging Deep – God’s Scripture is like a hidden jewel. It is rich with truth, but we must dig deep to find it.

What You’ll Need:

  • A Bible
  • A notebook to answer the questions in this study and to write any additional things the Lord will teach you throughout your study.
  • Several different colored pens or pencils
